Two men died in separate incidents in Kiambu and Kisumu counties after a stray dog attack and a confrontation over the movement of a funeral procession, with police investigations underway in both cases.

In Kiambu, 35-year-old George Kimani Gitangia died after he was attacked and mauled by several stray dogs while walking home in Githunguri village at about 3am on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

According to police, Gitangia was attacked by the dogs as he made his way home. His cousin reportedly came upon the animals attacking a person and raised an alarm, prompting members of the public to respond.

The rescuers chased the dogs away before discovering that the victim was Gitangia. He had sustained multiple dog-bite injuries across his body.

He was taken to St Teresa Hospital in Kikuyu for treatment and was subsequently referred to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. Police said he, however, died from his injuries while being transported to the referral facility.

His body was moved to the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting further procedures.

Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack, including efforts to establish the whereabouts of the stray dogs involved.

Police described Gitangia as a known habitual drunkard and a person of unsound mind.

And in Kisumu, detectives are investigating the death of 20-year-old Roy Omondi, who succumbed to injuries sustained after he was allegedly stabbed in the neck during a confrontation over the movement of a funeral procession.

The incident occurred at about 4pm on Friday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where mourners had gathered to transport the body of a relative to Nyamasaria.

Police said Omondi had been tasked with coordinating the procession when a tuk-tuk allegedly blocked the convoy’s path.

Omondi reportedly approached the driver and asked him to park properly to allow the procession to leave in an orderly manner. The confrontation allegedly escalated, with the driver drawing a knife from a jungle-green sheath and stabbing Omondi on the left side of his neck.

The suspect fled the scene with the knife, leaving Omondi with a deep wound.

He was rushed to JOOTRH and admitted in serious condition. Despite treatment, he died early Saturday morning, August 22.

Police officers visited the scene and recovered a jungle-green knife sheath believed to be connected to the attack. The item was preserved as an exhibit.

Omondi’s body was moved to the JOOTRH mortuary pending postmortem examination.

By this morning, the suspect was yet to be arrested.

Detectives are still searching  his whereabouts and to reconstruct the circumstances that led to the fatal confrontation.
