Nkaissery denies NIS interference in voter listing
Interior cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has trashed as propaganda claims by opposition chief Raila Odinga over alleged interference of voter registration process by the spy agency, National Intelligence Service (NIS).
The CS challenged Odinga to come forth and provide evidence linking the nation’s top intelligence wing to possible voter rigging allegations. “Those are political propaganda. It is unfortunate they have a habit of lying. I urge them to come forward to provide such evidence.”
Nkaissery at the sidelines of Nairobi region administrators’ conference at Bomas of Kenya yesterday.
Odinga claimed NIS is taking Biometric Voter Registration kits across our borders into Uganda and Ethiopia and assisting citizens of the two countries to register in a Kenyan election process.
“NIS interference in the current voter registration involves taking BVR kits across our borders into Uganda and Ethiopia and assisting citizens of the two countries to register in a Kenyan election process.
The agency is also assisting citizens of these neighbouring countries to acquire Kenyan identification documents then helping them cross into Kenya and register as voters.” Odinga said in a statement sent to newsrooms.
Through unsubstantiated allegations, Odinga the spy agency is behind multiple registrations and shared identity cards by interfering with the work of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (Iebc).
And while defending himself from claims of threatening Chiefs with summary dismissals, Nkaissery said it is his mandate to communicate what is expected of him to those serving under his docket.
“I have been accused of many things bordering on outrageous things. I want to say that anytime they want to commit crime, they invoke my name. The adminsitartors are my constituency by law. It is my duty to ensure Kenyans register and I have to relay that message to them,” said the minister.
The Jubilee administration and the opposition are on an overdrive mode in push for mass voter listing ahead of the August polls.
Nkiassery put to task the Nairobi Chiefs and Sub County administrators to take charge and ensure all uncollected identity cards are delivered to their respective owners and ascertain all citizens with ID cars are registered as voters.
In Nairobi alone, a total of 1.4million persons with ID cards are not registered voters.
