Five children died on Thursday on the spot when a grenade they were playing with exploded in Banisa sub-county, Mandera.
The children, aged between 12 and 17 years were playing with the object oblivious of the danger it posed on their lives.
Deputy county commissioner Mathias Chishambo said the incident happened at around 6pm while they were grazing their cattle. They had crossed over to Ethiopia in search of water and pasture.
“ I can confirm that they are all Kenyans contrary to earlier reports that some might be Ethiopians,” Chishambo said in a phone interview with the Star.
He suspects that the grenade which the children found on the ground might have been left behind by former British Soldiers.
