President William Ruto has appointed ten women in his cabinet seven of whom have been named for Cabinet Secretary positions and three to Cabinet-level portfolios.
He unveiled his new cabinet yesterday at State House, Nairobi, after a meeting with the outgoing ministers.
The seven women appointed to the cabinet secretary positions include Aisha Jumwa Katamwa who was running for the Kilifi gubernatorial seat under the United Democratic Association but lost to Gideon Mung’aro the Head of Public Service Gender and Affirmation.
Jumwa is facing a murder charge and a Sh19 million graft case.
In April 2022, two cases linked to Jumwa were pushed to August and September.
However, she said the two cases are a political witch-hunt.
Susan Nakumincha Wafula in charge of the health sector holds a Ph.D. in Business Management, and Florence Bore former Kericho Woman Representative is in charge of Labor and Social Protection.
Alice Muthoni Wahome who is the former Member of Parliament for Kandara and a strong ally of Ruto is incharge of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation.
Rebecca Miano who is a lawyer by profession is in charge of East African Community and Asal Development, Roselinda Soipan Tuya who is former Narok woman representative will head Environment and Forestry.
Miano is currently serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen), a position she has held since October 2017.
Miano also founded the Pink Energy forum in KenGen to address female and gender parity to close the gap within the company.
She has also served on the Finance Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and is a member of several boards alongside chairing the giant Stima Sacco Board.
Penina Malonza, former Kitui deputy governor will take charge of the Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage sector.
Assigned to Cabinet level portfolios are Monica Juma who served during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration as CS for Energy and Petroleum has been appointed as the National Security Advisor.
Harriet Chiggai who had unsuccessfully applied for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries (IEBC) has been appointed as the Women rights agency advisor and Mercy Wanjau has been appointed as Secretary to the Cabinet.
Ruto appointed most of his loyalists during the August 9 polls.
By appointing the ten women to office, Ruto fulfilled his promise to administer the two thirds gender rule in his first three months as President.
