Bungoma women record highest percentage of GBV experience

A survey has revealed that Bungoma county records most women who have experienced Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the country.

According to a survey dubbed the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022 released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Bungoma recorded 62 percent of women who experienced physical violence.

Murang’a recorded 53.7 percent while 53.5 percent of women were from Homa Bay county.

According to the survey, experience of violence among women increases with age with 20 percent of women aged 15-19 experiencing physical violence since the age of 15.

The survey revealed that 41 percent of married women in the country are much more likely to experience violence since 15 years than those who have never been married who account for 20 percent.

The most commonly reported perpetrator of physical violence among women who have ever been married or ever had an intimate partner was their current husband or intimate partner stands at 54 percent, followed by a former husband/intimate partner at 34 percent.

The survey also showed that 13 percent of women reported that they had experienced sexual violence at some point in their lives, and 7 percent reported that they had experienced sexual violence in the last 12 months.

Bungoma county recorded 30 percent, Murang’a 24 percent, Homa Bay 23 percent, and Embu 22 percent of women who experienced sexual violence.

Twenty-three percent of men who have ever been married or had an intimate partner experienced physical violence at the hands of other persons.

The survey also found that the common perpetrators of violence among women who have ever been married or ever had an intimate partner was their current husband or intimate partner 54 percent, followed by a former husband/intimate partner at 34 percent.

In men, the most common perpetrators of physical violence were teachers at 28 percent followed by current wives/intimate partners at 20 percent and former wives/intimate partners at 19 percent.
