Refugees at Kakuma injured after clash with police officers during protests

Several people have been critically injured after a peaceful protest at the Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana county turned chaotic earlier today.

The protests turned violent after police officers attempted to disburse the aggressive protesters who were marching toward the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office at the camp.

The protests, which began a week ago, were staged by the refugees who urged to reinstate essential supplies that were cut due to funding disruptions.

Images and videos seen on social media show the protesters sprawled on the floor as they accused the police of using excessive force.

For a better part of the day, the police have engaged the Kakuma refugees with tear gas in an attempt to disperse them.

Reports indicate the situations at the camp have deteriorated, with many unable to access essential services.

The scarcity of basic resources like food is stated to not only have worsened hunger at the camp but increased insecurity.

This comes even as UNHCR and the World Food program (WFP) had issued a warning over the situation getting worse with the financial constraints as the funding was scaled down since Trump suspended many donor funds.

USAID, whose programs were suspended by US president Donald Trump has been partnering with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support Dadaab, Kakuma, and Kalobeyei refugee camps.

WFP recently announced that there will be food rationing due to a lack of funding.

They said that the assistance provided has been reduced to just 40% of the minimum food basket leaving many of the refugees in a critical dire straits.

They will now receive only 3kg of cereals per person per month, while vegetable oil and pulses have been completely removed from the food basket.
