Will Sonko’s popularity help him clinch Mombasa gubernatorial seat?
Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko using the Wiper party shall be vying for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat.
Sonko brokered a deal that saw Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo shelve his ambition and will instead deputise him.
“As a result of wide consultations, Sonko becomes the Wiper candidate to be deputised by Ali Mbogo,” said Kalonzo when he handed over the nomination certificate to Sonko.
Sonko will battle it out with Abdulswamad Nassir, who will be flying the ODM flag, while Hassan Omar will be on the United Democratic Alliance ticket.
From Nairobi to Mombasa, where he was born, Sonko will be heavily relying on his popularity to clinch the top seat.
In a case where he was ousted from office, is still pending at the Supreme Court, where he says he will be vindicated.
Moreover, last month, Sonko and his immediate family members were banned from traveling to the US over corruption-related cases and abuse of office.
In 2013, he won Nairobi’s senatorial seat, and in 2017, he beat Evans Kidero to become Nairobi’s second governor.
