Trade CS Kuria hints at plan to kick out China Square from Kenyan market

Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has revealed plans to have China Square, a newly opened store at Kenyatta University’s Unicity Mall in Nairobi out of the Kenyan market.

He announced that he has given the go-ahead for the buyout of the lease by Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Pof. Paul Wainaina and hand it over to local traders following uproar on take-over of local jobs.

“I have today given an offer to Prof Wainaina the VC Kenyatta University to buy out the lease for China Square, Unicity Mall and hand it over to the Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa and Eastleigh Traders Association,” he said.

Kuria in a statement emphasised that the country welcomes Chinese investors as manufacturers but not traders.

“We welcome Chinese investors to Kenya but as manufacturers, not as traders,” he said.

China Square was recently opened to the public and has attracted criticism from local traders due to customers flocking the square for its affordability in items.

According to shoppers, the square offers a wide variety of household items, furniture, decorative items and more.
