Tour operators in Mara decry lack of cooperation from Tanzanian government

Tour operators have claimed that the Tanzanian government was reluctant to open its border to allow tourists to move freely between Masai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park.

They said despite several talks and appeals, Tanzania has not yielded and allow the opening of a border crossing point at Sand River Gate.

The reluctance, they said was against the East Africa Community treaty on free movement of people, goods and services.

“We have championed for the setting up of an immigration office at Sand River Gate to allow tourists to move between Mara and Serengeti unhindered for many years in vain. Talks between Kenya and Tanzania governments have dragged on without success,” said Hosea Serem, an official with the national Tour Guides and Drivers Association.

He said yesterday tour drivers who have attempted to cross to Tanzania have been arrested and detained and wondered why Kenya was still allowing Tanzanian tour vehicles to cross to Kenya.
