Three police officers arrested demanding Sh200,000 bribe from two University students
Three police officers have been arrested after they allegedly harassed two university students while demanding a Sh100,000 bribe from each.
According to a police report, the three officers attached to the K9 unit in Lang’ata are Victor Khisa, John Odhiambo and Timothy Otieno.
They accosted Alvin Kyalo, a student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Robert Mutugi Maina from Daystar University, at the T-Mall’s entrance.
According to the report, the two students had gone to Magharib building near T-Mall to have lunch when they were accosted by three men dressed in civilian who introduced themselves as police officers.
The officers arrested the two and informed them that they had been arrested in possession of bhang.
One of the students was placed in a white Toyota Vitz while the other was placed in a silver Toyota Premio which had three occupants one of whom was dressed in full jungle uniforms and other two in civilian clothes.
The two were held in the vehicles for more than four hours and were forced to call their parents to send Sh100,000 each in order to secure their release or be taken to custody.
One of the victims, Maina was taken to an M-Pesa agent near the DCC Langata offices where he was forced to withdraw Sh10,000 which his father had sent him.
He also added another Sh10,000 which he had and was released.
The other victim, Kyalo called his mother who reportedly works at City Centre. When she arrived, the officers asked her to hand over Sh100,000 in order to secure her son’s release.
According to the police report, she also declined the request to get into a police vehicle, instead, asking to be allowed to withdraw money from the mall.
At the mall, she spotted officers on patrol and reported the matter, prompting police officers to action.
The officers rushed to where the two motor vehicles were parked and managed to arrest two suspects who were in the Vitz and rescued Kyalo.
However, four other occupants who were in the Premio managed to escape upon seeing the police.
During the operation, detectives recovered a KDF smoke jacket, a reflector jacket, and a radio set gadget, make Simoco.
They are currently detained at Langata police station pending their arraignment as a manhunt for the suspects who fled was launched.
