A driver and his conductor have been arrested in Dagoretti for allegedly transporting illegal brew in a hearse.
The hearse was traveling from Western Kenya to Nairobi when it was stopped at Uthiru, Nairobi, according to Dagoretti police captain Frank Wahome.
The 135 litres of chang’aa brew were packaged in nylon carrier bags and covered in garments inside backpacks, according to police.
While transferring the body for burial, other packages were in a sack placed between dry corn in the compartment reserved for the casket.
“This is an eye-opener that even these vehicles which are supposed to be given the right of way, sometimes they are used in illegal deals,” Wahome said.
The culprits were nabbed at Uthiru after police trailed them for about 200 kilometres.
The commandant has ordered the police to make sure that cars transporting illegal goods are identified.
