The successful war on drugs at the Coast has gone a long way in reducing crime rate in the region, Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa has said.
Addressing the press in Mombasa Marwa observed that the crime rate in Mombasa and neighboring counties has significantly dropped because the government taken the drug barons head on.
“The region is relatively calm as you can all see…because the war on drugs has reduced the crime rate…usually there is a direct link between drugs and crime…by demolishing drug networks in the region we have succeeded in bolstering security because the number of addicts has gone down,” pointed out the Coordinator in Mombasa.
He said the war against drugs was still on as the government is keen on “sterilizing” the region to be drugs free adding that one of the major milestones in the war was the arrest of a notorious drug baron Bosire Makori who was arrested early this month alongside other barons.
“The government intends to completely sterilize the region as you saw recently we succeeded in arresting Bosire who has been a notorious baron in Kwale,” said the RC.
Bosire who is currently incarcerated is described by authorities as a notorious drug dealer who has been the main supplier of heroine sourced from Tanzania and consumed at the south coast of Kenya.
Last year Marwa said Bosire had “pocketed” a good number of police officers who he said have been protecting him thereby frustrating the war on hard drugs in the region.
Undercover detectives who carried out the raids described the suspect as slick and dangerous saying he made several escape attempts before they finally handcuffed him.
Marwa also said the government is now focusing on a number of landing sites from Lamu, to Takaungu and Vanga he said are being used by barons to sneak in drugs ferried through the high seas into the country.
“All these landing sites including private airstrips and private jetties are now on police radar because we have reliable information that barons are using these facilities to sneak in drugs into the country. They ferry drugs through the sea at night and land them in these private jetties. We are also keen on the trend of choppers and small planes taking off from these jetties at night,” he noted,
