Covid 19: private schools set to embrace tents, makeshifts
As schools reopen in three weeks, school Heads in some private schools want to embrace makeshifts in teaching children to comply with the Covid 19 protocols to curb the spread of the deadly pandemic.
Britom Academy Director, Beatrice Ayienda who has 300 pupils said she lacks adequate classrooms and enough space to accommodate the high number of learners and adhere to the government’s directives.
The Director said she will buy tents to harbor 15 learners as per the requirements, adding children will be 1.5 metres away and admissions will be limited.
“ The school will admit the number of learners based on the Facilities. We do not want to overstretch our Facilities and cause problems,” Ayienda said.
She said the management has organized for the teachers to teach the children in shifts to enhance their standard standards and performance in national examinations.
Precious Hope Academy Director, Samwel Mirieri noted private schools have challenges since they are not funded by the national government to improve infrastructure.
He said the Covid 19 pandemic is a national crisis and appealed to the government to fund private schools, saying they complement the education sector and deserves support.
“Private schools have a serious crisis. They will admit few learners and have a challenge in generating enough funds to pay staff and operational costs,” Mirieri said in Kisii town.
Daraja Mbili Day school Mixed secondary school Principal Luciah Gwaro and her Nyakongo Boys high school colleague, Samson Gitamo said they are ready for reopening despite having challenges in classrooms.
She said the school has installed washing points and stuck posters at strategic places to remind the children about the Covid 19 and measures to prevent it.
The Principal said the school, whose catchment is in Daraja Mbili slum has students from poor families who lacked soap to wash hands at home, risking their lives.
