KRU and Crown Paints ink Sh2.6 million Shujaa sponsorship deal

The sponsorship package comes at a time when the team is prepping for the back to back Asian leg of the HSBC Series tour with survival on their minds

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) through its biggest product Shujaa has benefited from a Ksh 2,612,000 cash boots from Crown Paints Limited.

Crown Paints has inked a sponsorship deal with KRU to support the team in three crucial legs of the 2024/2025 Sevens Series. The Hong Kong 7s (28th to 30th March 2025), Singapore 7s (5th to 6th April 2025) and Los Angeles 7s (3rd to 4th May 2025).

The cash kitty is segmented into two bits that will cater for player welfare and then corporate social responsibility (CSR). The deal comprises a cash injection of Ksh 1,612,500 and an in-kind contribution of Ksh 1,000,000 in paint products for pitch marking, facility enhancements, and a transformative school painting programme.

Speaking at the launch event at the RFUEA Grounds, Paul Odera, Director of Rugby, emphasised that sponsorships are not solely about financial contributions.

“There are a lot of aspects about the game, including the psychological and nutritional parts. The rugby ecosystem has many facets, and we are grateful that such sponsorships support these elements. This partnership will significantly contribute to creating a positive environment for our players,” he stated.

KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the long-standing relationship between Crown Paints and rugby in Kenya.

“This is not the first time Crown Paints is coming into the rugby landscape. It’s a partnership that has come a long way, and we are really grateful. This is the first step to many more, and we hope to expand further,” he noted.

Crown Paints Group Chief Operations Officer Richard Muturi expressed excitement about the collaboration.

“We are grateful to be part of the rugby landscape, especially at a time when the sport has been growing significantly. A lot of resources go into its development, and we are pleased that through this sponsorship, we will also be reaching out to the community,” he said.

The sponsorship package comes at a time when the team is prepping for the back to back Asian leg of the HSBC Series tour with survival on their minds. Kenya Shujaa are currently 9th ion the log and therefore the three tournaments’ will be a stern test for Kevin Wambua’s charges.

The initiative will brighten not only rugby pitches but also learning institutions, fostering an environment where sports and education thrive side by side.
