Two suspects arrested for administering fake Covid-19 vaccine in Kasarani

Two suspects have been nabbed in Kasarani, Nairobi, for administering what is believed to be fake Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 jabs.
The two, Kenneth Mukundi and Wallace Mugendi were arrested on Tuesday at Crane Hospital along Lumumba Drive, Kasarani where they administered fake vaccine to unsuspecting clients at Sh3000 a jab.
Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Synkian Tobiko at Milimani law courts, the duo will be detained for 5 days to enable police complete investigations.
It was reported that the two gave out the doses on diverse dates between July and August.
According to Corporal Kapario Lekakeny, the investigating officer from the Kasarani Directorate of Criminal Investigations, they had received more than 10 complaints from unsuspecting clients who had received the fake jabs each being charged.
The two suspects did not object to the request by the prosecution to hold them for the period.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe had directed the council to deregister all facilities charging for Covid-19 vaccination.
Kagwe said that administration of vaccines should be done by qualified staff who have received recent training from the ministry.
He noted that some health facilities are charging for administering vaccines instead of giving the jab for free.
“…It’s immoral and disturbing to see some politicians have begun to politicise the vaccination process for their own gains. We ask KMPDC to immediately begin to deregister institutions that are charging citizens or conducting the vaccinations unlawfully,” he said.
Additionally, Kagwe cautioned against fake vaccination stations.
The case will be heard on September 14.
