Pope Francis appoints new Nyeri bishop
Pope Francis has appointed Kitui Bishop Anthony Muheria as the new archbishop of Nyeri.
Muheri is set to replace Nyeri Catholic archbishop Peter Joseph Kairu who wrote to the pope last year requesting to be retired.
Kairu who has retired after 33 years in service had informed Vatican that he would leave office immediately a replacement is found.
Kairu who the first born in a family of 10, served as archbishop of Murang’a for 14 years and his second posting was Nakuru where he served for 11 years. He was posted to Nyeri in 2008 where he has served for eight years.
The episcopal appointment was made public in an announcement sent to bishops and archbishops in the country yesterday.
Reads the message: “on behalf of the apostolic Nuncio, I have the honour and pleasure to inform you that pope Francis has appointed the right reverend Anthony Muheria , presently bishop of Kitui as archbishop of Nyeri.”
Muheria is not only the Bishop of Kitui but also served as the apostolic administrator of the Machakos dioceses and was also a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) before he resigned.
Born in Murang’a on May 27, 1963, the Rt Rev Muheria is a member of Opus Dei and is known to have told the church not accept money from corrupt individuals.
He is the brother to Central Bank of Kenya Governor Dr Patrick Njoroge who is also a member of the Opus Dei.
