Suluhu declares two days of national mourning in honour of Kibaki

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu has designated two days of national mourning in her country in tribute to former President Mwai Kibaki.

Through a statement, Suluhu indicated flags throughout the country and all of its embassies will be flown at half-mast from Friday to Saturday.

“President Samia conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the people of Kenya and urged Tanzanians to join in solidarity with their neighbours during this difficult period as they mourn the death of their former leader,” the statement reads in part.

Kibaki, who served as the country’s third president from December 2002 to April 2013, died on April 22, 2022, at the age of 90.

Three current African presidents will attend former President Kibaki’s official state funeral today at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and South Sudan’s Salva Kiir Mayardit have jetted into the country.

Following Kibaki’s death, President Kiir declared three days of mourning for the late President, praising him for his participation in the South Sudanese peace process.

Kibaki’s body will be transported by road to Othaya Approved School Grounds on Saturday, utilising the Lee Funeral Home’s hearse, which will have clear glass windows that will allow Kenyans to see the coffin as the cortège makes its journey to Kibaki’s final resting place.
