Student implicated in Sh11.4million cyber fraud targeting gambling firm released on bond

In her ruling, Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekubi denied request by the Office of the Direcor of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to detain Mwabe for twenty days to complete forensic examinations on electronics seized from his Tatu City apartment

The prime suspect implicated in the high level cyber fraud involving a local betting firm, Seth Mwabe Okwanyo accused of siphoning Sh11.4million from a payment gateway outlet, Afrisend Money Transfer Limited has today been released on a Sh1million bond or al alternative Sh500,00 cash bail.

In her ruling, Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekubi denied request by the Office of the Direcor of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to detain Mwabe for twenty days to complete forensic examinations on electronics seized from his Tatu City apartment.

Prosecutors had also sought to obtain Mwabe’s bank and M-PESA records as part of the investigation but the court ruled the application lacked merit, noting he is not a flight risk.

However, the magistrate cautioned a university student against interfering with ongoing investigations into an alleged cyber fraud scheme targeting unnamed betting firm.

However, Betika has since denied the claims of having suffered any cyber related attack or losing money through hacking.

Official response by Betika to The Informer Media Group, September 3, 2025.

“Do not in any way interfere with the investigations. It is evident that the suspect has control of what the investigators want to probe. I therefore direct that he appears before the investigating officer on a weekly basis,” ruled the magistrate.

The prosecution alleges that Okwanyo is linked to a sophisticated cyber fraud targeting the popular betting platform.

However, the court noted that the application by the investigators fell short of the required threshold to justify continued detention.

The case is set to be mentioned on October 7, 2025, while Mwabe is required to report weekly to the investigative officer.
