Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has dispelled rumours that legendary Kenyan female boxer Conjestina Achieng’ is dead.
Sonko’s sentiments come after the former county chief visited Achieng’ in Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini Saturday afternoon.
He had gone to check on her as well as donate boxing equipment.
Rumours on social media platforms had it that the legend Achieng’ was dead.
She had been admitted to the institution in early July after her health and mental status deteriorated.
Achieng’s fondly known as Conje was once a darling to many boxing fans during his heydays after a successful career.
She however fell out of the sport after being bogged down by mental illness and financial problems since 2011.
Sonko was forced to come to the aid of the legendary sporting personality after a public outcry on different social media platforms and took Conje to several rehabilitation centres including Nairobi County rehabilitation centres, Parklands, and Diani Beach among others.
Videos and photos of the boxing star had sparked an uproar with Kenyans infuriated at the manner in which the government had abandoned her.
The former World Boxing Council, WBC, middleweight champion was seen in a sad state in her rural home in Siaya County.
The 44-year-old has been suffering from mental health complications for the better part of her retirement. Her father appealed to well-wishers in 2010 to help him cater for Achieng’s treatment.
Sonko has since reiterated that Conjestina was now in safe hands and responding well to the rehabilitation process at the health facility.
