Six dead after consuming illicit liquor in Njoro, Nakuru

At least six people have died in Njoro, Nakuru County after drinking illicit liquor.

Confirming the incident, Nakuru Deputy County Commander Joseph Tanui said several others had been taken ill.

“Each was brought to the hospital at different times… One was brought into the hospital today and pronounced dead before any treatment while there is another who was brought in three days ago,” said Tanui.

However, Njoro Sub-County Police Commander Jonathan Kisaka downplayed cause of the deaths, dismissing claims that they were caused by illicit brew.

“They died in their homes and we are yet to establish the cause of death. We cannot confirm that they died after consuming the brew,” said Kisaka.

According to Tanui, two of them were complaining of breathing problems while two were confirmed to have suffered poisoning.

On August 8, 2021, a group of Hodi Hodi residents consumed illicit brew sold to them killing five people within 24 hours and five others days later while receiving treatment.
