Police in Kirinyaga arrest two people over illicit brew

Police in Kirinyaga on Monday night nabbed 31 crates of second generation brews and arrested two people among them a distributor of the dangerous alcohol.

According to the Mwea East police boss Dorothy Gaitenga, the liquor is distributed in various outlets in Mt Kenya region but it is manufactured in Nairobi.

Gaitenga said after officers impounded some 31 crates of the liquor christened Shujaa Ice and Batian Special, whose labels were fake and without the Kenya Bureau of Standards mark.

She said the drinks had floating particles which is an indicator of the presence of impurities or foreign bodies.

“The packaging is also substandard since the bottle tops are leaking when you place the bottle upside down,” Gaitenga said.

The police boss said she has involved multi-government agencies to look into the matter including the Government Chemist which took some samples for analysis.

“We have also been able to arrest the distributor of the liquor and the retailer who did not have a license from the Kirinyaga County Government as required before opening the liquor business,” she said.
