Ruto names global finance expert as Cooperative University Chancellor
Chitunga boasts of 15 years of experience in Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

President Ruto has appointed Global Development Finance expert Bernard William Chitunga to be the Chancellor of the Cooperative University of Kenya for a period of five years.
“In exercise of powers conferred by Section 38(1) of the Universities Act 2012, I appoint Bernard William Chitunga (DR) to be Chancellor of the Cooperative University Kenya for Five years effective January 10, 2025,” President William Ruto stated in a Kenya Gazette notice yesterday.
Born 36 years ago in Malava, Kakamega County, Chitunga boasts of 15 years of experience in Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
He currently serves as a Partnership Specialist and Secretariat- Special Funds Management at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Beijing, China.
His immediate undertaking before joining AIIB was at the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), Africa’s premier multilateral financial institution as the Senior Officer of partnerships, Donors, and Special Projects.
Chitunga holds PhD in Sustainable Development, a Masters in Global Business from Universita Cattolica Del Sacro, Italy, and an MBA from UGSM Monarch, Switzerland.
This is the second time President Ruto is tapping international experts to lead Kenya’s universities.
Early last year, he appointed Prof Patrick Verkooijen as Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.
Prof Verkooijen is the CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation, the foremost international organisation dedicated to the challenge of adapting our world to the global climate emergency.
