Ruto, Moi family face political duel after Gideon seeks to recapture Baringo Senatorial post in mini-polls
The contest will be a pointer if President Ruto still commands un-paralleled political sway in his Rift Valley backyard at a time his popularity said to be waning significantly across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections
President William Ruto and the family of the late President Daniel Moi are once again headed for a political duel that will determine their respective influence in the larger Kalenjin community after Gideon Moi fronted his candidature seeking to recapture the Baringo Senatorial position in the upcoming November 27 mini-polls following his humiliating defeat in 2022.
The contest will be a pointer if President Ruto still commands un-paralleled political sway in his Rift Valley backyard at a time his popularity said to be waning significantly across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gideon will run on the Kenya African National Union (KANU) where he also serves as the national chairman.
“The Kenya African National Union (KANU) wishes to formally announce that, following extensive consultations, deliberations, and consensus within the party and with the people of Baringo, our National Chairman, Gideon Moi, has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election,” the statement read.
In 2022, Gideon lost to UDA’s William Cheptumo who passed on in Fenruary this year after a long illness.
Gideon will now face Vincent Chemitei of the ruling UDA party and lawyer Benjamin Chebon who is vying as an independent candidate.
