Kiswahili scholar Sheikh Nabhany takes final bow at 90

Renown Kiswahili scholar Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Nabhany has died at the age of 90.

Sheikh Nabhany passed on today morning at his home in Matondoni, Lamu county and was buried later in the evening according to his Islamic faith.

Nabhany, was referred to as Professor and expert in Swahili language and culture by many and was credited for contributing in the growth of the language by helping develop names for new innovations.

He was a self-trained scholar who assisted many academics in their research and was a recipient of the Presidential Order of Golden Warrior (OGW).

According to relatives, Nabhany, was born in 1927 who hosted Swahili teaching and research classes for both local and foreign students at his home in Old Town, relocated to his place of birth in Matondoni five years ago due to sickness.

He was regarded as the father of Swahili poetry and apart from authoring many Swahili literature books, he helped many researchers, writers and journalists in their works.

Nabhany would criticize scholars and journalists for failing to use correct Kiswahili while addressing their audience and many journalist would occasionally troupe to his home for guidance on how to horn their language.
