Five injured after lorry rams into police curfew roadblock on Thika road

Two police officers and four civilians were yesterday injured after a lorry rammed into a curfew roadblock mounted on Thika Road.

Witnesses and police said the accident happened when a speeding lorry headed for the Central Business District (CBD) rammed onto a police lorry that had blocked the highway to enable police to conduct a search on motorists caught up in the menace.

According to reports, the driver of the lorry that was transporting rice to Nairobi was placed under lawful custody on the same night after it was discovered that he was drunk.

The lorry in question is a Mitsubishi FH, registration number KCT 179T plying from Thika general direction towards the City centre.

The lorry had three occupants on board; a driver identified by the name Elias Mwaniki and two others identified only as Fancy and Martin.

“One of the officer sustained skull injury and right hand fractures.” An impeccable police source said.

The two officers were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital.

The two officers were part of a contingent of law enforcement officers deployed to enforce the daily curfew

The driver of the lorry was arrested and told police he lost control of it as he approached the roadblock.

He will be arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts today.

This comes barely two days after a senior police officer was injured when a motorcycle hit him at a roadblock in Pangani area, Nairobi on Sunday.

The Pangani Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samir Yunus was manning the roadblock along Dr Griffins Road when a speeding motorcycle ran over him.

Officials said Chief Inspector Yunus sustained head injuries after he fell out of a heavy knock he got from the rider.
