Police officer charged with soliciting Sh4,000 bribe from parent of defiled girl

EACC sleuths arrested Adongo and a civilian after they received an alert that the latter had gone to receive the bribe on behalf of the police officer

A police officer and a civilian have been released on a Sh10,000 cash bail each after they were arraigned in court on Thursday following their arrest by sleuths from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on allegations of soliciting and receiving a Sh4,000 bribe in connection with a defilement case.

Police Constable Philip Ochieng Adongo, who is attached to the Sarang’ombe Police Post in Kibera, Nairobi, and George Otieno Oywer are alleged to have demanded the bribe as an inducement to arrest a suspect accused of defiling the complainant’s daughter, a matter that had earlier been formally reported at the police post under OB No. 16/18/07/2025.

EACC sleuths arrested the suspects on Wednesday after conducting an operation after they received an alert that Oywer had gone to receive the bribe on behalf of the police officer.

“Yesterday, EACC conducted an operation leading to the arrest of two suspects, PC Adongo and a civilian identified as George Otieno Oywer, after Oywer received the bribe from the complainant on behalf of the officer,” EACC stated.

They were taken to the EACC headquarters for processing, where they spent the night before being arraigned in court.

A recent survey done last year by the anti-graft authority ranked the Kenya Police as one of the government departments most associated with unethical practices, recording a score of 48.2 percent in public perception rankings.

Other security-related agencies also featured prominently in the corruption ratings. The Directorate of Immigration was rated at 5.1 percent, while the Traffic Police Department scored 3.6 percent. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration registered 3.2 percent in the same assessment.
