Raila unbowed, says ‘Mega Mondays’ protests still on despite condemnation by government
A major face-off between the police and the opposition leaders led Raila Odinga under the Azimio One Kenya Coalition umbrella is expected to play out during tomorrow’s anti-government protests after the opposition chief said they remain unbowed and that the planned demonstrations are still on countrywide.
In a Twitter post earlier today, Raila has said they are ready for the next phase of anti-government protests dubbed ‘Mega Monday’.
The opposition has sustained the bi-weekly mass demonstrations on Mondays and Thursdays that has been marred by violent engagement between demonstrators and police while looters have continued to lay siege targeting private enterprises.
The police on the other hand have been accused of using excessive force even on unarmed peaceful protesters and against media practitioners covering the anti-government riots.
“We’re all ready and set for Mega Monday.” Raila said on his Twitter handle.
Yesterday, speaking during an interdenominational prayer service in Kakamega, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called the protesters violent goons out to loot.
He also said the opposition leader is pushing for handshake claims Raila has previously dismissed questioning the legitimacy of president William Ruto’s in office.
The president has been categorical saying the rule of law must be upheld and no extra-constitutional means will be allowed to push selfish interests.
“This is no longer demonstrating. It is post-election violence characterised by mugging, looting and violent robberies. The government will assert its authority in protecting lives and property and enforcing the rule of law.” The DP said.
He said the opposition leader Raila had perfected the strategy of instigating violence so he could force himself into government.
“His intention is to cause violence, have people killed, destroy property and then force his way into government through handshake,” added the DP, dismissing any attempts to hold any talks with him on running the government.
