Deaths on roads reduce by 7 per cent in 2016
Road accidents in the country have reduced by 7 percent with 1070 Kenyans dyeing in the year 2016 as compared to 1150 persons who died in 2015.
As part of efforts to rescue the road accident victims, NTSA will continue to partner with key hospitals to offer supportive equipment’s.
Speaking on Wednesday after handing over clutches and wheelchair equipment worth Ksh 350,000 to Thika Level Five hospital, NTSA deputy director Duncan Kibogong urged Kenyans to observe road safety measures to zero-rate the number of people dying as a result of carelessness on the roads.
Kibogong said NTSA will not relent from conducting crackdown on road carelessness noting that Alco blow test would continue.
‘Being the world road safety week, we are moving around hospitals in the country offering supportive machineries that are expected to ease movement of road accident victims. We all have a duty to secure ourselves on the roads by fully observing road safety measures,’ said Kibogong.
He said that Thika road, Nakuru-Naivasha highway, Mombasa road, Jogoo road and Garissa road were the most vulnerable to accidents appealing for sobriety by road users.
‘Kiambu is ranked third after Nairobi and Nakuru County on road accidents. We want road users to work with us to ensure we further the reduced number of accidents,’ he urged.
Thika Level Five hospital superintendent Andrew Toro said Kiambu County was in the forefront in sensitizing locals on road safety measures.
‘We have a lot of robust strategies towards ensuring that we prevent our people from being involved in these accidents. We have allocated mobile ambulances to all constituencies in Kiambu as part of our mission of saving lives. Thika level five also has a special ward designed to handle emergency cases emanating from road accidents,’ said Dr. Toro.
‘We also want to sensitize the public on the need of wearing safety belts and use of helmets for the boda boda operators all in efforts to further the lowering of accident incidents. We are very happy for the provision of key accident medical equipment’s from NTSA and these partnerships will go a long way to curbing accidents,’ he added.
