MP George Koimburi freed on Sh300,000 bail after being charged with staging his abduction

The prosecution informed the court that the lawmaker had staged the abduction to avoid arrest and arraignment at Kiambu Law Courts, where he was scheduled to face four counts related to land fraud

Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi has been freed on Sh300,000 after he was today charged with orchestrating his abduction.

While presenting their case at the Milimani Law Courts before Senior Principal Magistrate Ban Mark Ekhubi, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), represented by Prosecution Counsel Victor Owiti and Nora Achieng, informed the court that the lawmaker had staged the abduction to avoid arrest and arraignment at Kiambu Law Courts, where he was scheduled to face four counts related to land fraud.

The court heard that Koimburi conspired to defeat justice in Mugutha area, Juja Sub-County, Kiambu County, on  May 25.

Additionally, the MP faces a separate charge of publishing false information.

The prosecution told the court that Koimburi issued a press statement via YouTube from Karen Hospital on June 7, claiming he had been abducted and tortured by criminals.

The statement was purportedly false and intended to cause panic to the public.

Koimburi pleaded not guilty  and was released on a cash bail of Sh300,000 with three contact persons. s.

The case is scheduled for mention on August 5 when the magistrate is expected to give further directions.

Last week, the court had issued a warrant of arrest against the Juja MP after he failed to appear in court to face charges relating to staging his abduction.

Koimburi was expected to answer to charges of conspiring to defeat the course of justice in a case involving seven individuals, but he failed to appear before the court, prompting the magistrate to issue a warrant for his arrest, along with two other accused persons who were also absent.

The charges stem from the May incident where the lawmaker, alongside Juja Constituency Development Fund Chairperson Peter Kiratu Muhia, Kanyenya-ini Ward MCA Grace Nduta Wairimu, and others, allegedly staged the MP’s abduction in the Mugutha area of Juja.

The prosecution shared that the staged abduction was orchestrated to obstruct Koimburi’s arrest and arraignment at the Kiambu Law Courts, where he was expected to face four land fraud charges.
