Sh16.9billion capitation fee disbursed to schools

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has said the government has disbursed Sh16.9 billion capitation fee to support the education of students.

He warned school principals to stop sending learners home to collect school fees.

He also added that school heads should no longer complain about lack of funds.

“We want to strongly urge principals to stop sending pupils home for money,” the CS addressed the matter yesterday during a press briefing held at Hospital Hill High School in Nairobi.
They can at least give parents a few more days to sort themselves.
A total of Sh14.2 billion is set to be given to secondary schools while the remaining Sh2.7 billion is for primary schools.
Earlier, school heads had raised a concern that the CS had warned them about sending students home yet there was a shortage of funding in schools.

“We are asked to retain learners in school but how will we feed them without money? How are we expected to pay workers, yet we don’t have money?” complained one of the principals.

The principal of Hospital Hill High School, Ken Bunyasi told the CS that the majority of schools have received funds. “Most school heads started receiving the funds in their accounts yesterday,”  Bunyasi said.

Many principals confirmed that the money was already in their bank accounts but Nyandarua was singled out with Magoha saying many students had been sent home in the county. “I am aware that in Nyandarua there has been a massive exodus of children from school”.

These children must be recalled back to school immediately,” the CS said.

The CS also urged teachers to focus majorly on their responsibilities and use the funds allocated properly in order to reach the set objectives.
Magoha advised the teachers to keep in touch with the parents on matters concerning fees to help the students continue staying in school, which he said was the best option.
