Out of 1,138 A plain in 2021 KCSE exams, 441 cancelled due to irregularities

In the just-released 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, at least 1,138 candidates scored a Mean Grade of A plain. Out of the 1,138, 349 of whom were girls while 789 were boys.

There was an increase in the number of candidates who scored the minimum university entry qualification Grade of C+ and above from 143,140 (19.03%) in 2020 to 145,145 (17.49%) in 2021.

“The percentage of candidates with a Mean Grade of C+ and above has declined from 19.03 to 17.49,” CS Magoha said.

With an increase in the uptake of vocational courses countrywide Magoha intimated that the Ministry of Education was looking at an expansion plan in the future that will allow more candidates to get access to Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to pursue Diploma courses.

Candidates with grade C- and above in 2021 stood at  325,896  which was a 39.27% increase compared to 2020.

“We, therefore, need to invest more in TVET institutions where the bulk of our 31 KCSE Examination grandaunts will study,” he said.

Moreover, at least 441 candidates had their results canceled due to various irregularities.

“There were 441 cases reported in the 2021 KCSE results and one case of a centre with all the results withheld. I wish to categorically state that KNEC will not have any mercy on examination offenders who must be dealt with decisively. Consequently, examination results of all the 441 cases have been canceled” said CS Magoha

Citing some of the offenses recorded during the examination period include having mobile phones, access to unauthorised materials, and impersonation.

“Unauthorised materials 203, mobile phones 223, impersonation 8, collusion 6 and causing a disturbance at examination room where I think the student almost hit the teacher 1,” said Magoha.
