Munya asks national government to give counties money to pay doctors
Council of Governors Chairman Peter Munya has today said the county governments have no money to pay doctors having spent all what they had to caution the health sector for the days the medics were on strike.
Munya said the county governments spent money that was not budgeted to buy medicines and other amenities to the church sponsored health facilities.
“We are more than ready to pay the doctors what is theirs but only after we the money is provided by the national government,” Munya told a press confrence at the council’s headquaters.
Last week the COG said doctors would not be paid for the 100 days they were on strike, even after President Uhuru Kenyatta asked them to do so.
Responding to the President’s request Munya said: “There is no law stating that someone should be paid for work they have not done.”
But today a humbled Munya, who was accompanied by his Makueni counterpart Kivutha Kibwana, assured the doctors that the county governments will not hold their money and asked the national government to quickly release the money.
The CoG chairman had insisted that the doctors would only be paid from the time they returned to work.
