Moi University students petition VC over graduation List

Trouble is brewing at Moi University after hundreds of students based in Nairobi Campus set to graduate this December petitioned Vice Chancellor professor Laban Ayiro over withholding of their results by unpaid lecturers.

Yesterday evening, a team of fifty students left Nairobi for Eldoret main Campus to deliver the petition after the university released graduation schedule that effectively lock them out from graduating since their transcripts from first year to forth year are yet to be generated.

“As a class, we have made several efforts in trying to get our results from the Department of Communication Studies but with no success. In most cases we would be shown incomplete results where a whole class is missing marks for some units with reasons that some lecturers are yet to submit our marks or, some lecturers are withholding our marks and scripts due to unpaid arrears by the university,” the petition reads in part.

According to the petition seen by The Informer, the students are seeking Ayiro’s intervention since the December graduation schedule signed by deputy VC professor J N Kimengi demands that final submission of Senate approved graduand list to chairman of the senate and duly signed by the Dean must be finalized by Friday this week.

Majority of those affected are pursuing Bachelor of Science in Communication and Public Relations (CPR) and Bachelor of Science in Communication and Journalism (CJ), from the School of Human Resource Development, Department of Communication Studies, Moi University, and Nairobi Campus.

All successfully finished academic course work in December 2016. Some of the lecturers withholding the students the results are owed up to Sh1.5million in arrears by the university. Most of the students affected are 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 Academic Years.

“We have faced difficulties in accessing our full marks and provisional transcripts to enable us confirm our results and plan for graduation as required by the university in a memo sent out directing students who have qualified for the conferment of various degrees to confirm their examination results, accuracy and order of names from their respective Dean’s Offices by Wednesday 15th November,” the students lamented.

The students are also unable to access a database system and a central point where they can access and verify our consolidated marks from first year to final year. “This, therefore, informs our request for your intervention into the matter, and since we have successfully finished academic course work, we duly qualify for the 35th Graduation that is slated for Thursday, 21st December, 2017.

  1. Hello,I would like to bring up an issue of students being wrongly exempted from graduation list of December while already graduated students are again on the list. This incompetence is in both HR and BBM where students will missed two graduations this year due to staff not doing their work diligently .I would like this matter to be addressed to the Dean of students and V.C.
This is unfair and it will lead to the Moi university being sued soon by students who were wrongly not put in the list after complying with all the examination and fee completion requirements.
    Thanks you.
