PS Muoria call on rebranding of TVET, says there is shortage of skilled personnel countrywide
Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) Principal Secretary Esther Muoria has led stakeholders in launching the Steering and Technical committees to spearhead the harmonisation and implementation of National TVET Communication and Advocacy Strategy.
During the dialogue and media engagement session organised by Zizi Afrique in attendance of youths and other TVET representatives across the country, Muoria reiterated that the current trained TVET products do not meet market expectations hence deemed incompetent in the industry.
PS Muoria concurred that indeed there was need to rebrand the state department so as to ensure skilling of youths and not the educating and training norm.
“There is need to rebrand the TVETs across the country…. It is high time we stopped to educate and train and instead skill the beneficiaries. We would rather end up releasing a minimum number of skilled personnel to the job market than huge numbers who do not posses the skills,” said PS Muoria.
She explained a scenario where President William Ruto during a state visit abroad was requested for skilled personnel only to realise that the country could not meet the standard requirements with the current unemployed qualified personnel from across TVETs in the country.
“Those that we have as a country do not have the desired skilled personnel,” insisted Muoria.
Zizi Afrique Chief Executive Officer John Mugo called on stakeholders to invest in youths through the TVET programs bearing to the fact as entailed in the country’s 2019 census report which showed that youths comprised of the nation’s majority population.
“We conducted a research on four key issues youths come along the way especially as far as TVET is concerned including; Gender, social status, geographical denomination and representation…. We found out that 40 per cent of youths get job opportunities as a result of social status and connections,” Mugo observed.
PS Muoria pledged her support as she inaugurated the committees, tasking them to swiftly draft and implement the communication strategy to spearheaded progress at the orphaned and dwindling state department.
The attendees confirmed the need for more funding and cooperation by stakeholders for the betterment of the country’s largest producing department of the skilled personnel.
