Magoha set to retire

Cabinet Secretary for Education George Magoha announced yesterday that he will be retiring at the end of his term.

Magoha said this while responding to recent rumours that surfaced indicating that he had requested to be kept in cabinet by the incoming government.  According to reports, he wishes to be retained in order to oversee the comprehensive implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The Cabinet Secretary, however, dismissed such claims stating that he was not looking for any employment from the coming government.

“First of all, let me disabuse the minds of citizens, I am not looking for another job, what I have is enough, I have a target to meet. So I will work even on Monday and that is on the eve of elections towards our target,” said Magoha.

He further stated that he would only leave office at the end of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure.

“After election results are announced, I am serving someone called President Uhuru Kenyatta and I will leave with him. When he is still there as the president, you will see me out working and when he stops, I stop,” Magoha explained.

Magoha made these comments after examining CBC classrooms at Nairobi School.  He expects to finish building classrooms before his retirement time arrives.

As he retires, his time as the education boss will be highly scrutinised. Since he took charge, a lot has been implemented both in basic and higher education.

He will be remembered for launching the CBC curriculum and dissolving university councils he deemed ineffective.

His efforts on curbing cheating in national exams will be lauded as some of his achievements. This effort had been in conjunction with his cabinet colleague, Fred Matiang’i, who was then heading the education docket.
