KWS arrests two suspected poachers in Narok

Two suspected poachers are being held at the Kenya Wildlife Services headquarters in Narok County after they were found in possession of 600 kilograms of game meat.

The two were intercepted by KWS officers at Narosura area as they were packaging the meat onto a pickup truck late in the night. The two had packed the game meat into sacs as they used motorbikes to move around the Mara.

KWS officers who received a tip from members of the public managed to arrest the two a they were loading the meat onto the pickup.

According to KWS deputy senior warden Francis Muchiri the meat was to be ferried to Nairobi whereby they would sell the meat at ksh 300 per kilogram.

Muchiri stated that the drought season has hit hard the Maasai mara and animals were at a risk.He noted that the poachers had concealed evidence as they hid the bones and hooves as well as the head of the animals they had killed.

Muchiri added that there was a lot of competition for resources in the Mara and cautioned poachers that they would face the full face of the law.

He further noted that the economic value of wildlife is great adding that they will not allow poaching to go on.

Muchiri stated that the meat will be taken to the laboratory to ascertain which animal species had been poached.
