Shock as man commits suicide after poisoning his two children to death
Police are investigating an incident where a 35-year-old man allegedly poisoned his three children, killing two of them before committing suicide in Malindi village, Kwale county on Sunday.
The deceased Ali Mwazuma Rashid who was a carpenter is claimed to have come home after visiting his in-laws and prepared food for his three children, ages five, eight, and ten.
According to preliminary investigations, the man was found to be estranged from his wife, who was away from home on the day of the crime.
Kinango police chief Fred Ombaka said that Rashid left the house after the children ate the poisoned dinner but subsequently returned.
Ombaka stated that when the 10-year-old girl discovered her father’s body dangling from the roof, she began screaming, bringing the attention of the neighbours.
“We found that the deceased had poisoned his children and hanged himself using a sisal rope. They were all still alive at the moment the neighbours arrived and they were all rushed to Kinago Sub-county Hospital. Unfortunately, the man and two children died. The 10-year-old girl is still being treated at the hospital,” said Ombaka.
Police claimed they discovered a note at the scene referencing disagreements with the man’s in-laws.
The officer stated that investigations were still on to determine the root cause of the occurrence.
“His wife was not home and she only found out about the deaths from the public, We have been engaging the in-laws to know what transpired that led to the deceased committing the inhuman act,” he said.
The bodies are awaiting an autopsy at Kinago Sub-county Hospital mortuary.
