Koome, Mwilu ask Kenyans to pray SCOK render judgement that promotes our Constitution
After three days of hearing of petitioners and respondents of the seven consolidated presidential result pleas by Supreme Court judges comprising of Chief Justice Martha Koome, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Justice, William Ouko, Justice Mohammed Ibrahim, Justice (Dr.) Smokin Wanjala, Lady Justice Njoki Ndungu and Justice Isaac Lenaola came to an end this afternoon.
The team proceeded for a two-day break and are set to give judgement on Monday September 5, 2022 at a time to be communicated.
Chief Justice Martha Koome called for an adjournment of the hearings as the judges proceed to deliberate on the petitions. She asked Kenyans to include the bench in prayers ahead of the remaining task facing the justices.
“Pray for us that we render a judgement that promotes our Constitution, as anchored in law. One that nurtures our democracy, brings harmony to our country and everything good stated in our constitution,” Koome appealed.
Confirming that guided by the Constitution, Monday runs till midnight, she thanked the participants for smooth cooperation.
“We work as a team here. We divide roles. We consider ourselves equals. None of us has veto power but of course, we have a team leader. Pray for us as we undertake the next phase,” said the Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.
She commended the judges for the cooperation and asked them to exercise the same manner moving forward. She shared light moments of her colleagues duly performing their tasks as assigned revealing a daily duty roaster assigned to each member of the bench on managing the flow.
“Every day there has been a marshal to ensure that you kept to your lanes. Today I was the marshal and the day you laughed the most Justice Smokin Wanjala was the marshal,” cracked Mwilu.
“We ask you that you pray to whatever God you pray to; that we may have a high sense of discernment, and that we shall return to Kenya a judgement not less than what Kenyans expect,” Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu said.
The Supreme Court judges bench resolved to adjourn the presidential results petition hearing pending the Monday judgement.
