The Kenyatta National Hospital Annex, Othaya, was yesterday renamed Mwai Kibaki Hospital ahead of the former president’s state funeral at Nyayo National Stadium.
The judgement to immortalise the former president was arrived at after an intense lobbying by state officials.
The former Head of State had, however, declined multiple suggestions to have the level six hospital named after him before his demise.
The facility has a capacity of 35-bed that is meant to offer specialised treatment for children and kidney diseases, and operate an intensive care unit.
The Sh1 billion hospital was a key development project that President Kibaki undertook in Nyeri ahead of his retirement.
KNH CEO Evanson Kimuri had announced the take-over of the Othaya hospital in 2019 and said the hospital would be run by the national government to serve at least eight counties in the central region.
