Kirinyaga Senator decries rising insecurity in region

Rising insecurity in the town of Kerugoya that recently saw the killing of a resident has irked residents and caught the attention of Kirinyaga County Senator Kamau Murango.

Criminals have been visiting terror to businesses and homesteads creating panic amongst locals and this according to Senator Murango needed to be nipped in the mud expeditiously. The lawmaker is now demanding that local security agencies move fast to address the situation before more casualties fall prey.

Through a statement seen by the Informer Media, the Senator said; “Back in September 2024,I wrote a letter to the then Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration seeking his intervention on increasing incidences of insecurity in our county, more so our towns of Kerugoya and Ngurubani. If this call had been heeded, and action taken to address the problem of insecurity in Kerugoya Town, probably we would not have lost this life. Now, we are asking the question, how many more lives must be lost so that the government can act and address insecurity particularly in Kerugoya Town and generally in Kirinyaga County?”

Senator Murango has warned that the matter can no longer be treated lightly and as such the authorities must act.

“It cannot be business as usual when criminals possess firearms illegally, businesspeople operate in fear and innocent lives are lost in crime scenes, yet the police act as if everything is normal. The killing of the civilian as he tried to help victims of robbery with violence in his neighborhood must be a line in the sand for insecurity in Kerugoya town. The National Police Service in Kerugoya town must swing into action and protect the residents.”

The frustrated first time lawmaker further pointed out that the family of the deceased get justice. He demanded that the perpetrators of the heinous crime be brought to book and charged in court.

“We cannot have a security system that fails to tackle elements who are a danger to our people. I am angry about this. Nothing should be off the table in this investigation-nothing. And most importantly, it must lead to change. This time, it must be different. The people of Kerugoya and Kirinyaga County at large deserve security from this government!”
