A human rights group, Justice Caucus, has called on the government to take responsibility for the death and destruction of property witnessed in several parts of the country after the General Election.
Speaking in Nairobi Friday, the group said the State should meet reconstruction expenses of destroyed homes and funeral costs of the dead.
“Kenyans in the struggle for liberation deserve the right to express their dissatisfaction with the outcome of election. Killings and arrests are not the way to go and it is only right if the government compensates the affected and their families,” said the lobby’s Liz Adundo.
She further said the Government should establish a compensation fund for affected women who have faced sexual violations, noting that those who suffered assault in the 2007/08 post-election turmoil had yet to be compensated.
The group urged other lobby groups to compile a list of people who have died as a result of violence and forward it to the police Spokesperson for review and ease of identifying the people to be compensated.
