Temporarily reprieve for troubled Isiolo governor Guyo after he secured court order halting impeachment

Today, Justice Heston Mbogo certified the matter as urgent and issued orders suspending the impeachment proceedings, including any debate on the motion

Embattled Isiolo governor Abdi Guyo has secured temporary reprieve after Isiolo High Court halted his impeachment process pending determination of a petition he filed before the court on Friday last week.

Guyo moved to court seeking conservatory orders to stop the County Assembly from proceeding with the motion to remove him from office a day after all eighteen Members of the Isiolo County Assembly unanimously signed favour of the impeachment motion initially slated for debate tomorrow.

Today, Justice Heston Mbogo certified the matter as urgent and issued orders suspending the impeachment proceedings, including any debate on the motion.

“An order is hereby issued restraining and preventing the respondents, either by themselves or their agents, from admitting, processing, debating or in any way considering the Notice of Motion dated June 10, 2025, for the proposed removal from office of the Governor of Isiolo County,” the order read in part.

The motion to impeach Guyo had been tabled by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana, with debate scheduled for Friday, June 20.

However, the court’s directive has effectively stalled all related proceedings.

Justice Mbogo further ordered the County Assembly to furnish the governor with a copy of the impeachment motion and all supporting documents within 48 hours.

Assembly Speaker Mohammed Roba and the County Assembly, who are listed as respondents in the case, were also directed to file their responses within seven days.

Prior to the court’s intervention, the County Assembly had invited the public to participate in a consultative exercise scheduled for Wednesday across all ten wards – Chari, Cherab, Ngare Mara, Burat, Oldonyiro, Wabera, Bula Pesa, Kina, Garba Tulla, and Sericho.

Residents were also requested to submit written memoranda to the Clerk of the County Assembly.

The Assembly was expected to debate the motion this Friday, but the plan has now been suspended following the court ruling.

Interestingly, after tabling the motion, 16 MCAs reportedly went into hiding and switched off their mobile phones, raising speculation about internal divisions within the Assembly.

Majority Leader Abubakar Godana (Garbatulla MCA) and Kinna MCA Abdinur Dima Jillo, however, remained visible and are believed to have shifted their support to Governor Guyo.

The case continues to fuel political tension in the county, as residents await the court’s final decision on the fate of the embattled governor.
