The Principal Secretary for the State Department of Correctional Services Mary Muthoni and Kenya Prisons Commissioner General John Warioba have today handed over 400 bags of maize relief food to East African Community(EAC), ASALs and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano at the Prisons Headquarters, Magereza House.
The donation will be distributed to Mutha Ward residents in Kitui county.
The initiative complements government pursuit to curb the skyrocketing drought menace in the ASAL communities in the country.
“The East African Community(EAC), ASALs and Regional Development welcomes the donation as it will play a big role in the government’s effort to contain the dire situation,” claimed CS Miano.
The CS said that the ministry will add 150 bags of beans to supplement the donation so as to ensure a balanced meal to more than 350, 000 people in Kitui county currently experiencing acute hunger.
“This food is meant boost the hunger situation caused by the persistent drought which has left millions of Kenyans withought food and water,” Miano observed.
Miano revealed that the national and county governments have partnered to introduce mitigation methods to help find lasting solutions so as to evade similar incidences moving forward.
The CS added that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is currently coordinating a multiagency team to come up with a response team in efforts to identify and provide support to affected areas.
Warioba stated that the correctional services had decided to join millions of Kenyans to respond to the calls and push to donate food to the hunger stricken communities.
“I am happy that we are handing over this food which is basically from our harvests and from the Magereza sacco,” Warioba said.
