IPOA probing police brutality claims in guns search after booker
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has initiated a public inquiry over alleged police brutality against civilians in search of seven G3 rifles and hundreds of ammunition following last week raid at Booker Police Post in Mumias.
Ipoa director of communications Dennis Oketch said the authority has established an inquiry desk at Christian Growth Church in Shibale Township that will remain open from 8am to 5pm starting today to Friday this week.
“Following media reports of alleged police brutality meted out to members of the public in Mumias area of Kakamega County arising from the reported loss of Police arms and ammunition at Booker Police Post, and pursuant to its statutory mandate, IPOA launched investigations to determine culpability of offending police officers with a view to making appropriate recommendations.” A statement from Ipoa says.
The authority which serves as the civilian oversight bosy against the police wants members of the public who witnessed or have information of the alleged police brutality to converge at the Church to share the information and to officially lodge complaints.
“IPOA has established a desk at Christian Growth Church in Shibale Township. Time: 8am to 5pm. Duration: Wednesday 30th to 2nd December 2016,” Oketch added. A combined contingent of General Service Unit and Administration Police are combing the area in search of the seven guns and ammunition.
Last week, the national Police Service (NPS) offered Sh500, 000 rewards for information leading to the arrest of thugs who stole seven G3 rifles. Booker police post, near the entrance to Mumias Sugar Company.
The unknown number of attackers invaded Booker Police Post and slashed the officer on duty, broke into the armoury and stole all guns.
