India rolls out worlds first DNA Covid-19 vaccine

India has launched the world’s first non-invasive and painless DNA-based vaccine for Covid-19 on Sunday.

ZyCovid is a vaccination that uses a genetically altered, non-replicating variant of the type of DNA molecule known as plasmid.

According to Gujarat-based pharmaceuticals business Zydus Cadila, the vaccine is directly delivered into a person’s DNA, generating an immune reaction.

“The vaccine will be priced at Rs265(sh403) per dose and the applicator at Rs93(sh142) per dose,” the company said in an official briefing.

According to scientists, the plasmids contain instructions for producing the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused Covid-19. When a person is inoculated, the virus instructs the cells in the recipient’s body to begin producing the virus’s spiky outer covering.

When the immune system “detects” it as a threat, antibodies are produced in reaction.

The vaccination is given in three doses at 28-day intervals using a spring-powered device that injects the shot into the skin as a narrow, precise stream of fluid.

On August 20 of last year, Indian regulators gave the developer authorisation for emergency usage in people aged 12 and up.

The approval came after the findings of a phase three clinical trial involving 30,000 participants revealed a 66 per cent effectiveness rate for symptomatic cases.

“The pharmaceuticals controller general of India has approved the conduct of phase III clinical trials for the nation’s first indigenously created DNA vaccine candidate covid-19,” the government said earlier this year.

The department’s secretary, Doctor Renu Swarup, expressed his hope that the vaccine’s results will continue to be positive.

“The Indian Government’s Department of Biotechnology has teamed with Zudus Cadila to address the urgent need for an indigenous vaccine for covid-19,” he stated.
