Varsity side Strathmore Leo’s stunned Kenya rugby big boys KCB 15-10 to clinch the just concluded Christie’s sevens held at the RFUEA grounds in Nairobi.
The Louis Kisia side scored three unconverted tries against the banker’s two unconverted tries to lift their first major silverware since the team was founded.
On their way to the finals, Leos outclassed Western Bulls 29-07 in the semi-finals while KCB RFC narrowly edged Menengai Oilers 17-12 in their last four clashes.
Leo’s hooker Philemon Olang scored the first try soon after kick-off when the ball was offloaded to him by Richard Omendo however Festus Safari missed the conversion for a 05-00 lead.
The student Captain Barnabas Owuor received a superb pass from Olang to run to the furthest right corner to score their second try Safari missing again the conversion to make it 10-00.
Bankers Bob Muhati scored their first try after a well passing game from Captain Jacob Ojee and Michael Wanjala.
Fly-half Levy Amunga missed the extras to bring the game to 05-10.
Matthew Mugaya scored Leos’s third try Safari missing the conversion to make it 15-05 at the intervals.
In the second half, a recharged KCB kicked off the game with Levy Amunga producing a magnificent run slicing through the Leos defence to score the banker’s second try.
With Amunga needed to convert the much-needed conversion, he missed for a 10-15 with the centre referee blowing the final whistle.
Leos Philemon Olang was named the most valuable player while Homeboyz RFC Hermon Wamalwa was the top try scorer and the player with 60 points accumulated.
Patrick Odongo from Daystar falcons was named the most promising player.
Nakuru based side Menegai Oilers came in third to secure a bronze medal after defeating Western Bulls 12-07 in the third-place playoff.
