Government opts to involve citizens in security ahead of August polls
The government has vowed to use the “citizen participation in security” model as a measure of ensuring security and safety of Kenyans ahead of the August 8 polls.
Nyumba Kumi security initiative chairman Joseph Kaguthi reiterated that the plan is the best strategy for the members of the public to report cases of crime in different parts of the country.
“Through this initiative, the security agencies can receive classified alerts on crime incidences and would be best placed to protect the lives and properties of Kenyans before and after the general election,” he said.
Speaking during a workshop to discuss the draft guidelines for implementation of community policing, the former provincial commissioner underlined the need to raise security awareness of citizens to the level of national security.
He expressed optimism that the move by Nyumba Kumi taskforce to engage different stakeholders in public and private sectors will ensure the success of the initiative.
“It is important to engage all the players for the country to realize meaningful changes in our security situations during this campaign period,” he said.
Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua on his part said the country is committed to prevent all the security threats from emerging and properly responding to them when they emerge.
“The government will use the necessary sanctions, mediations and even force where necessary to ensure security of the people and property,” he said in a speech read on his behalf by the Principal Administrative Secretary to and assistant secretary to the Cabinet Stephen Kirogo.
The meeting yesterday which was attended by directors of human resources management, directors of operations and managers of security sought to institutionalize citizen participation in security as a first line of defense.
The head of public service called on the participants to evaluate the levels of involvement of citizens in the security of their institutions to enhance security of citizens at the grassroot level.
