Gideon Moi declares he will seek presidency in 2022

KANU chairman and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has declared he will vie for presidency in 2022 General Elections.

Speaking at his rural home in Sacho after a church service at the Africa Inland Church (AIC) Tandui in Baringo Central, Moi said that he is not backing down however tough the duel is.

He appealed to the Kalenjin community to give him a chance to prove himself.

“I have already made an ultimate decision and I am not backing down however tough the duel is. I am only asking my community to support me in this journey. If I lose, I will have lost humbly than being despised and if I win, it will play to our advantage as well,” he said.

Moi said he intends to follow his father’s footsteps by ensuring that besides serving his people in Baringo the ultimate goal is to become Kenya’s president.

Baringo Senator promised that he will transform the country, especially areas that are lagging behind in development.

He said the party would make a declaration an September 30 at the Bomas of Kenya.

Both Deputy President William Ruto and Gideon harbour presidential ambitions making the supremacy battle between the two tough in Rift Valley politics.

Since the death of former President Moi, there has been a struggle between Gideon and Ruto over the community leadership, hence the rush and need for the blessings from Talai elders.

Moi was coronated as a Kalenjin elder by Talai elders while Ruto was named the Kalenjin spokesman by a section elders giving him blessings to vie for the presidency.

Talai elders who blessed Gideon were led by Mzee Christopher Koyogi while the ones who blessed Ruto were led by Reverend Canon (Rtd) James Baasi. Both are claiming leadership of the clan found in Kapsisiywa in Nandi county.

Gideon has stepped up his visibility in the region with a series of events while the DP is also making efforts to lock the region ahead of the 2022 polls.

The majority of the elected political leaders in the region are allied to Ruto, but Gideon also enjoys support from key leaders including Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos and Moiben MP Silas Tiren, among others.
