Waking up with a hangover, especially if you have to report to work can be the worst feeling ever! The exhaustion, irritability while your body defies you and refuses to cooperate and you can barely drag yourself out of bed. The pounding headache makes you feel like you’ve been run over by a city council truck, literally.

Often times you are at a loss on where to start… do you start with a painkiller, water or do you just go back to bed and call in sick?

Many of us are all too familiar with the extensive list of hangover symptoms that commonly follow a night of excessive drinking. Interestingly, everyone has a hangover cure they swear by.

Although there are many alleged hangover treatments, such as drinking pickle juice or putting a lemon in your armpit before drinking, only a few are scientifically proven.

The majority of hangovers subside within 24 hours. A hangover has no single cure, but treating its symptoms can help you feel better. To assist alleviate hangover symptoms, try the following home remedies:

Up your hydration game

Alcohol being a diuretic causes your body to remove fluids from your blood through your renal system at a much quicker rate than other liquids. Thus, taking alcohol can quickly lead to dehydration.

Dehydration is a key cause of a hangover, albeit it isn’t the only one. When you have a hangover, drinking water or other fluids might help you avoid dehydration symptoms including dry mouth, dizziness and exhaustion.

A better option would be hydrating before you imbibe.

Have some coffee

Coffee or tea can also help you feel better, especially if your hangover has you fatigued and head pain.

Try ginger to ease nausea

Ginger is one of the greatest natural cures for easing an upset stomach, which is a common symptom of a hangover, according to doctors and nutritionists.

Getting extra sleep is one of the most effective ways to recover from a hangover. In fact, poor sleep combined with alcohol usage is likely to cause delayed cognitive performance during a hangover.
