Former Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi appointed SHA CEO

The CS stated that her appointment comes after a competitive recruitment process, which had a total of 92 applicants, with 12 being shortlisted and interviewed.

Former Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Mercy Mwangangi whas been named the Chief Executive Officer of the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Her appointment was announced by Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale.

“The Ministry of Health wishes to announce the appointment of Mercy Mwangangi as the new CEO of SHA,” Duale announced.

The CS stated that her appointment comes after a competitive recruitment process, which had a total of 92 applicants, with 12 being shortlisted and interviewed.

The CS expressed confidence in Mwangangi as he stated that she has all it takes to spearhead the Insurance Authority to deliver its mandate.

“The ministry wishes Mwangangi all the best on her appointment. We are confident she has what it takes to steer SHA and deliver its mandate,” he added.

Mercy, a doctor by profession, becomes the first female to serve as the CEO of SHA, taking over from Robert Ngasira, who has been in an acting position since November last year.

Mwangangi has over 15 years of experience in Universal Health Coverage, institutional reform, and health systems strengthening.

She is proven leader in health governance, resource mobilisation, and strategic partnerships, with an exceptional track record of driving policy transformation and financing reforms in Kenya’s healthcare landscape, as a result of which Duale said she is poised to lead SHA into the next Chapter.

Currently, Mwangangi is the Senior Health Systems Strengthening Director at AMREF Health Africa, where she has been spearheading health financing and health security investments across Africa, securing development assistance funding for primary healthcare and universal coverage expansion.

While serving as a CAS in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime, she was part of the team that championed adaptation to the new normal that was brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic under the leadership of then Health CS Mutahi Kagwe.
